Heavy Machine Operator Jobs

A machine operator jobs is a job category that can usually find employment in the production department of an organization.  The person holding this job position is referred to as a machine operator, or a heavy machine jobs. There many types of heavy equipment that a worker operates, and his designation will depend on the machine where he has specialization, such as a sewing machine operator.

 

Duties And Responsibilities

People working in the machine operator job category have the responsibility to craft and build different goods including furniture, plastic items, clothes, and many other things.  They use different types of equipment in the manufacturing process, like for example, sewing machines, CNC machines like the lathes and the milling machines, X-ray machines, printing machines, precision grinders, and many other heavy equipment.

 

Also included in the operator’s responsibilities is making adjustments and calibrations on the machine he or she is using. If the adjustment required is beyond the capability of the operator, a machinist may be called to do the task. A machinist has more technical skills than an operator and he has an extensive knowledge in operating different kinds of machinery.

 

A machine operator is also tasked in testing the part that was produced by the machine, to determine whether or not it confirms with the specifications and industry standards. The machine operator job is repetitive;  the foot pedals, switches, buttons and levers are used over and over until a piece of metal or plastic that was inserted into the machine turns into a finished product, or formed into a desired shape. Due to the repetitive nature of the job, there are many cases of boredom, psychological burnout and stress.  The companies have learned to rotate assignments of workers which resulted in the operators being more productive and contented in their job.

 

Beyond the operation of a heavy machinery, an operator may include maintenance and repair in his duties and responsibilities. The equipment is oiled and cleaned before using and at the end of the shift.  If you are a sewing machine operator, you may need to replace the needles and threads.  Likewise, if you operate a printing machine, you may be frequently replenishing the cardboards and papers used in the process.  It is also an operator’s responsibility to lock the equipment which is mechanically operated by keys.

 

A person in the heavy machine operator job may also do equipment repairs, order new spare parts, do the replacing of parts such as circuit boards, joints, and other mechanical or electronic components. If the equipment is beyond economical repairs, the operator may arrange to have the device scrapped and disposed.  He then orders a new equipment.

 

With regards to becoming a machine operator, the requirements to get employment in this particular field is not as high as that required for a machinist job.  You need to submit a high school diploma or its equivalent.  You may get hired as an on-the-job trainee where you will observe the ongoing work before you are allowed to handle a specific machine.  The knowledge can be gained between a few weeks and a year, depending on how simple or difficult the operation is.
